30th April 2002: Perth – Cervantes

Ramblings from the road

We head off 125kms north together with Harry & Roselyn on the old Agnew Road to the place of the same name (good dirt road) and then west to Sandstone where we looked around some historic sights – London Bridge, Brewery and Contradiction Wall. Then headed off further west to Mt Magnet.

Broke camp in overcast conditions that saw some light drizzle. Off to the Lily Windmill – a replica of a Dutch windmill. Drove south to Cape Riche to have a look and decided to camp there as not many around (which was surprising after Parry Beach & Cosy Corner). Quick camp set up with the hiking tent & bivouac.

40km drive north to the Porongurup National Park, where we walk the 4km Castle Rock trail. Good panoramas from the top of an aptly name group of boulders, Albany in the south, Stirling Ranges in the north.

Broke camp at a very slow pace and drove to our reconnoited “Easter spots”. Found a good site by the river where not much room for an Easter hoarde… we thought!

Another one of our favourite camping places is Wilson’s Promontory, one of the most scenic and spectacular areas in Victoria. Rugged mountain ranges with gigantic rocks, boulders as big as office blocks and densely grown bushland surrounded by beautiful beaches.

Broke camp and drove some 50 kms south to Alexander Bridge campground which is on the Blackwood River about 25 kms from Augusta. Canebrake Pool, like Baden Powell Pool, was a good spot and provided excellent river camping. Alexander Bridge continues this theme; the Blackwood River is quite substantial here (wide and deep).
