Continue reading “Central Australia Safari”Bit of a tricky one in the saddle in order to get from Lake Königssee to Luzern. Leave 8am; two bus trips and two train trips later we arrive via Innsbruck and Zurich at 6:30pm (as scheduled by the masters of chronology) for our Luzern Sojourn. Apropos of comfort, a lot to be said for first class, long distance train travel!

I believe taking moderate refreshment at the Arthurhaus and a day’s break from trekking parts of the Bavarian Alps in climes fit for purpose but perhaps unusual for the local population, who have had to put away their snow shoes and don the thongs!

Friday March 3rd, 1989, 5:30 PM, we arrived at Zeally Bay Caravan Park in Torquay, booked a campsite spot and were told to select one on the back fence.

Presently having a break at Arthurhaus, eating a Bavarian cold meat and cheese plate accompanied by a half litre of their (current) finest – Stiegl. It’s lunchtime. More on this soon but first let me retrace our steps several months.

Not too crowded, fairly basic camp spot – pit toliets (ok), no fresh water, no fees & wood is supplied for camp fires. More of a fishing spot. During our stay we visited Hopetown (30kms west), Fitzgerald National Park where we walked up East Mt. Barren (2hrs return), take an ok 4WD track into Quoin Head, a secluded bay with a river outlet nestled between two cliffs. Also went fishing with a chap (Peter), who we met in the camp ground. We started off ok with a few bites but Julie had to finish early after getting a touch of mal de mer.

Marg and I took up camping in 1985 because we both love the Australian bush, the country air and all the other things the ‘great outdoors’ brings you. It also gave us a chance to be by ourselves, away from a busy houseful of friends, girlfriends and anyone else who felt free to walk in.
