Western Australia – first days

20 January 2002: Nullarbor Roadhouse – Caiguna

Into WA for our first time – we have now officially been to every state & territory of Australia!

Extensive quarantine on the border involving the loss of honey, lettuce and zucchini. Stop at Cocklebiddy Cave where we descend into an amazing underground lake some 150 metres into the earth. Then onto Caiguna, our 3rd timezone for the day) for an overnight stop.

21 January 2002: CaigunaEsperance

Travel, more travel! In the car most of the day. Caiguna, 146.6kms of straight road (yes, no bends) – one of the longest in the world. Circa – 580kms for the day.

Up at Eight

Once again we are up at eight,
It seems to be the norm of late,
Even where the call is for an early rise,
It no longer comes as a surprise,
Whilst an early start would be great,
We invariably get up at eight.

If for some reason we retire late,
It's still up at eight,
On other occasions it's early to sack,
Up at eight we've got the knack,
Out body clock works, I tell you mate,
As long as we get up at eight.

A dawn awakening is needed,
Only achieved if the alarm is heeded,
Even in the hiking tent,
Where sleeping is not 100 percent,
Regardless of circumstance, it seems our fate,
Is to always get up at eight.

Though it seems that being up at eight,
As we move further west, might abate,
No daylight saving, different time zone,
Need to be careful when we phone,
It's possible in the West Australian State,
There will be no more up at eight.

For darkness at night it's less of a wait,
A lot harder to be up at eight,
You see the silly buggers don't adjust their clocks,
The sun falls slower over the docks,
You'd be missing half the day mate,
If you were up at eight.
